Primary Passage: John 6:47
Transcript
When you believe on Jesus Christ, do you receive everlasting life right then, or only after you do something else?
John 6:47 says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”
Look carefully at the wording. Jesus identifies the person: “He that believeth on me.” Then He tells us what is true of that person: he “hath everlasting life.”
He does not say the believer might have everlasting life someday. He does not place works, baptism, perseverance, or another requirement between believing and having life. The verse presents everlasting life as the believer’s present possession.
And the context supports that distinction. John 6 speaks of everlasting life as possessed while resurrection is still future. So receiving everlasting life and being raised at the last day are not the same point in time.
Could someone argue that another passage adds a condition? They can make that argument, but they still have to harmonize it with the plain words of John 6:47.
The strongest conclusion is simple: when a person believes on Jesus Christ, that person already has everlasting life.
