2 Kings 9 Overview
Elisha sends a son of the prophets to Ramoth-gilead to anoint Jehu king and commission him against Ahab’s house. Jehu’s officers quickly proclaim him king. He drives to Jezreel, kills Joram of Israel, and has his body cast into Naboth’s field in explicit connection with earlier prophecy. Ahaziah of Judah is pursued and mortally wounded. Jezebel confronts Jehu from a window, but palace eunuchs throw her down, and dogs consume most of her body, fulfilling Elijah’s word.

Coming from
Chapter 8 showed Hazael taking Syria’s throne and Judah’s kings entangled with Ahab’s house.
In this chapter
The Jehu revolution begins, and long-delayed judgments against Ahab’s dynasty move rapidly into history.
Leads into
Chapter 10 continues the purge through Ahab’s remaining sons, Baal worshipers, and then evaluates Jehu’s incomplete reform.
Key understandingExplore deeper
Jehu is anointed as an instrument of judgment, but Kings will not therefore call everything he does righteous. The chapter repeatedly connects events with earlier prophetic words, especially Naboth’s blood and Jezebel’s fate. Jehu’s commission and Jehu’s personal accountability must both be preserved.
