Before you read Isaiah 4

Coming from

Judah’s social order collapses under judgment as dependable leadership is removed, immature rulers rise, oppression spreads, and the proud luxury of Zion’s daughters is stripped away.

In this chapter

After judgment, Isaiah briefly pictures a purified and protected Zion: the Branch of the LORD is beautiful and glorious, survivors are called holy, and God’s presence shelters the restored assembly.

Leads into

Isaiah sings of the LORD’s carefully tended vineyard that produced wild grapes, then pronounces six woes on Judah’s greed, drunkenness, moral reversal, pride, corruption, and rejection of God’s word.

Key understandingExplore deeper

This short chapter follows the humiliation of Zion in chapter 3. The movement is deliberate: judgment cleanses rather than erases God’s purposes for Jerusalem, and a holy remnant remains.

The interpretive center of Isaiah 4 is the chapter’s own movement: judgment is not the end of zion’s story. Read its poetry, signs, historical references, and later biblical connections from that center rather than treating isolated phrases as detached slogans.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Judgment is not the end of Zion’s story

The survivors of Jerusalem are described as holy after the LORD has washed away filth and blood.

The LORD Himself provides glory and protection

Cloud, smoke, fire, and a covering recall God’s presence with Israel in the wilderness.

The Branch belongs to the book’s hope

The phrase points readers toward Isaiah’s larger expectation of divinely provided renewal and righteous rule.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Exodus 13:21-22

The cloud and fire imagery recalls the LORD’s guidance and presence during the exodus.

Isaiah 11:1-10

A later Branch passage explicitly develops the righteous Davidic ruler and worldwide hope.

Jeremiah 23:5

Jeremiah also uses Branch language for the righteous Davidic king.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not force every detail of the Branch language into a complete messianic doctrine from this verse alone.

Read it within Isaiah’s developing use of royal and renewal imagery.

Do not miss the historical Zion setting.

The chapter speaks of Jerusalem, its survivors, cleansing, and divine protection before later theological connections are made.

Read Isaiah 4 watching for…

the contrast between judgment and renewed beauty

who is called holy

washing and purging language

the return of cloud-and-fire imagery

the LORD’s protective covering over Zion

1War leaves many women seeking the name of one man2-6The Branch of the LORD is glorious and Zion is cleansed and protected
1

And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

2

In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

3

And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:

4

When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.

5

And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.

6

And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.
