REVIEWED OVERVIEW

Job 23 Overview

Job longs to find God so he can order his cause before Him and hear His answer. Though he cannot locate God in any direction, Job believes God knows the way he takes and that he will come forth as gold after testing. Yet God’s sovereign purpose also leaves Job afraid because it cannot simply be turned aside.

Before you read Job 23

Coming from

Eliphaz had falsely accused Job of serious oppression and urged him to return to God.

In this chapter

Job ignores the slanderous details and focuses on the deeper issue: he wants access to God and trusts that God knows his true path.

Leads into

Chapter 24 expands Job’s argument by asking why obvious injustice and oppression can continue without immediate judgment.

Key understandingExplore deeper

Job 23:10 is not a general promise that every trial will produce material success. Job’s confidence is that God knows the truth of his path even when Job cannot find or understand Him.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Truth 1

God can know a person’s way even when that person cannot perceive God’s activity.

Truth 2

Testing imagery points to vindication of what is genuine, not automatic earthly prosperity.

Truth 3

Job’s confidence in his integrity coexists with fear of God’s unsearchable purpose.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Connection 1

Psalm 139:1-12 likewise teaches that God knows and sees even when human beings cannot escape or perceive His presence.

Connection 2

1 Peter 1:6-7 uses refined-gold imagery for tested faith.

Connection 3

Romans 11:33 emphasizes the depth and unsearchableness of God’s judgments and ways.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Keep this clear 1

“I shall come forth as gold” should not be used as a promise that all suffering produces visible success or wealth.

Keep this clear 2

Job’s claim to have kept God’s way is an integrity claim, not a declaration of sinless perfection.

Keep this clear 3

The inability to find God experientially does not mean God is absent or ignorant.

Read Job 23 watching for…

Job’s repeated desire for a hearing before God.

His inability to find God in any direction.

“He knoweth the way that I take.”

The refined-gold image.

The mixture of trust and fear in Job’s view of God’s purpose.

1

Then Job answered and said,

2

Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.

3

Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!

4

I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

5

I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.

6

Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.

7

There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

8

Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:

9

On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:

10

But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

11

My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.

12

Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

13

But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.

14

For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.

15

Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

16

For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:

17

Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.
