REVIEWED OVERVIEW

Micah 5 Overview

Micah names Bethlehem Ephratah as the source of a future ruler in Israel whose goings forth are from of old. The chapter joins Messiah’s coming, Israel’s travail, shepherd-like rule, deliverance from enemies, the remnant’s influence among nations, and the LORD’s cleansing of false military, occult, and idolatrous securities.

Before you read Micah 5

Coming from

Micah 4 promised Zion’s future exaltation, remnant gathering, kingdom, and redemption even after Babylonian captivity.

In this chapter

The promised kingdom is focused on a ruler from Bethlehem. His rule brings shepherding, greatness, peace, and deliverance, while the LORD removes the false supports and idols His people had trusted.

Leads into

Micah 6 returns to covenant lawsuit language, asking what the LORD requires and exposing Israel’s attempts to substitute multiplied offerings for justice, mercy, and humble walking with God.

Key understandingExplore deeper

Matthew 2:5–6 explicitly quotes Micah 5:2 when the chief priests and scribes identify Bethlehem as the birthplace of the Christ. That inspired use gives the verse direct messianic significance.

The phrase “whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting” is unusually strong language about the ruler’s ancient origin. Christians rightly read it in light of the New Testament revelation of Christ, while still respecting Micah’s immediate promise of a Davidic ruler from Bethlehem.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

God’s promised ruler comes from an unexpected small place

Bethlehem’s littleness does not prevent it from serving the LORD’s purpose.

The coming ruler shepherds in the strength of the LORD

His greatness and peace arise from divine authority rather than human self-exaltation.

Remnant restoration includes influence among the nations

The remnant is pictured both like dew bringing blessing and like a lion with unstoppable strength.

The LORD removes false securities

Military assets, witchcrafts, soothsayers, images, and groves are all stripped away.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

1 Samuel 16:1–13

David’s anointing at Bethlehem provides the historical Davidic background for Micah’s promised ruler.

Matthew 2:1–6

The New Testament explicitly identifies Micah 5:2 with the birthplace of Jesus Christ.

John 7:42

Even during Jesus’ ministry, people recognized the scriptural expectation that Christ would come from Bethlehem and David’s line.

Ezekiel 34:23–24

Ezekiel also promises a Davidic shepherd over God’s people, complementing Micah’s shepherd-king imagery.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not detach Micah 5:2 from its surrounding restoration context

The Messiah promise belongs within Israel’s larger hope of gathering, shepherding, peace, and purification.

Do not manufacture a detailed chronology from every transition in the chapter

Micah moves prophetically across horizons without always marking the time gaps.

Do not make military or political success the essence of Messiah’s work

The chapter emphasizes shepherding, peace, divine strength, and cleansing as well as victory.

Read Micah 5 watching for…

Bethlehem’s smallness and its surprising importance.

The description of the ruler’s origin and strength.

Shepherd language and the promise of peace.

The two contrasting images used for the remnant among nations.

Everything the LORD promises to cut off from false security and idolatry.

1

Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.

2

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

3

Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.

4

And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

5

And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.

6

And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

7

And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.

8

And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.

9

Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, and all thine enemies shall be cut off.

10

And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots:

11

And I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds:

12

And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:

13

Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.

14

And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee: so will I destroy thy cities.

15

And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.
