Before you read Psalms 92

Coming from

Psalm 91 centered on confidence under the protection of the most high. Psalms is an anthology rather than a continuous chronological story, so the connection here is canonical and thematic.

In this chapter

The worshipper calls it good to praise morning and night, rejoices in God's deep works, contrasts temporary wicked flourishing with the righteous growing like palms and cedars, and declares God upright.

Leads into

Psalm 93 turns to the lord reigns above the floods, continuing the Psalter’s arranged movement without requiring that the two psalms describe consecutive historical events.

Key understandingExplore deeper

Psalm 92 belongs to Book IV of the Psalter (Psalms 90–106). The heading identifies it as a song for the sabbath day; its prosperity imagery describes rooted covenant flourishing, not guaranteed ease in every moment.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Central truth

Sabbath praise for God's works and the flourishing righteous.

Praise truth

In Psalm 92, praise responds to God’s character and deeds and draws the worshipper beyond self-preoccupation.

Wisdom truth

In Psalm 92, godly wisdom evaluates life by the LORD’s revealed moral order rather than by appearances alone.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Praise connection

1 Chronicles 16 provides a major Old Testament model of public praise for God’s works. This connection helps frame Psalm 92.

Wisdom connection

James 1:5 directs those who lack wisdom to ask God, the giver of wisdom. This connection helps frame Psalm 92.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Keep praise in context

The praise practices in Psalm 92 show the breadth of Israel’s worship; not every listed physical expression becomes a universal church requirement.

Keep wisdom in context

Do not turn a wisdom contrast in Psalm 92 into a mechanical formula that guarantees immediate earthly outcomes in every case.

Read Psalms 92 watching for…

give thanks morning night.

works make glad.

brutish man.

wicked spring grass.

righteous palm cedar.

1-6It is good to praise the LORD for his lovingkindness, faithfulness, and great works7-15The wicked perish, but the righteous flourish and declare that the LORD is upright
1

A Psalm [or] Song for the sabbath day.It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:

2

To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,

3

Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.

4

For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.

5

O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.

6

A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.

7

When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever:

8

But thou, LORD, art most high for evermore.

9

For, lo, thine enemies, O LORD, for, lo, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

10

But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.

11

Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me.

12

The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

13

Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.

14

They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;

15

To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
