Start with the big picture.
First John writes about fellowship with God, joy, walking in light, confession of sin, obedience, brotherly love, truth about Jesus Christ, antichrists, assurance, answered prayer, and eternal life. John repeatedly gives believers objective grounds for confidence while distinguishing fellowship from false claims. The letter culminates in the explicit statement that God has given eternal life and that this life is in his Son, and that believers may know they have eternal life.
