Start with the big picture.
James is a wisdom-rich letter about mature Christian conduct under trial. It addresses endurance, asking God for wisdom, temptation, hearing and doing the word, partiality, the relationship of faith and works, control of the tongue, heavenly versus earthly wisdom, worldliness, planning, riches, patience, prayer, and restoring the erring. James repeatedly exposes empty profession and useless conduct while calling believers to a living, practical faith.
