Start with the big picture.
Jonah tells how the LORD sends an Israelite prophet to cry against Nineveh, the great Assyrian city. Jonah flees in the opposite direction, is stopped by a storm, cast into the sea, preserved in a great fish, recommissioned, and finally preaches in Nineveh. The city responds to the warning, God turns from the announced destruction, and Jonah becomes angry. The book ends with the LORD exposing Jonah’s misplaced pity and teaching him about divine compassion toward a great city.
