Start with the big picture.
Lamentations is a collection of five poems grieving Jerusalem after catastrophic destruction. The poems describe hunger, death, ruined worship, shame, exile, and the apparent triumph of enemies while openly confessing that the LORD’s judgment did not come without cause. In the center of overwhelming grief, the book remembers God’s mercies and faithfulness, waits for him, and ends with a desperate prayer for restoration.
