Start with the big picture.
Nahum announces the fall of Nineveh, capital of Assyria. The book opens with the LORD’s jealousy, vengeance, power, goodness, and knowledge of those who trust in him, then turns toward the overthrow of the violent imperial city. Nahum does not present Nineveh as the repentant city seen in Jonah; it portrays a later Nineveh filled with cruelty, plunder, lies, and bloodshed. The prophecy comforts Judah by declaring that the oppressor will not endure forever.
