What is happening here?
David orders a census of Israel despite Joab’s objection. After the numbering, God judges the nation with pestilence. David confesses his sin and pleads that the people not bear the punishment for his wrongdoing. At God’s command he builds an altar on Ornan the Jebusite’s threshingfloor; God answers by fire, and the plague stops. David then recognizes this place as the site for the LORD’s house and Israel’s altar.
