What is happening here?
Rehoboam goes to Shechem to be made king. The people ask him to lighten Solomon’s heavy service. He rejects the older men’s counsel and follows younger advisers, promising a harsher yoke. Ten tribes revolt and make Jeroboam king. When Rehoboam prepares for war, Shemaiah says the division is from God. Jeroboam then establishes calves at Bethel and Dan, new worship centers, non-Levitical priests, and an invented feast to keep his subjects from Jerusalem.
