What is happening here?
Hezekiah sends messengers throughout Judah and even into the former northern kingdom, inviting the people to Jerusalem for Passover. Because the priests were not sufficiently sanctified and the people could not gather in time, the feast is kept in the second month as allowed in the law for certain circumstances. Some northern hearers mock the invitation, while others humble themselves and come. Many participants are ceremonially unclean, so Hezekiah prays for them, and God heals the people. The celebration becomes so joyful that they extend it another seven days.
