What is happening here?
Ahaz becomes king of Judah and does not follow David’s example. He practices idolatry, including making his son pass through the fire. When Syria and Israel attack, Ahaz sends temple and palace wealth to Tiglath-pileser and declares himself Assyria’s servant. Assyria captures Damascus. Ahaz visits there, admires a pagan altar, sends its pattern to Urijah the priest, and installs a copy in Jerusalem, rearranging temple worship and making further changes ‘for the king of Assyria.’
