What is happening here?
Hezekiah tears his clothes, enters the house of the LORD, and sends leaders to Isaiah. Isaiah promises that the Assyrian king will hear a rumor and return home. A further threatening letter comes, and Hezekiah spreads it before the LORD, praying that Jerusalem may be saved so all kingdoms know the LORD alone is God. Isaiah announces judgment on Assyria and protection for Jerusalem. That night the angel of the LORD strikes 185,000 in the Assyrian camp. Sennacherib returns to Nineveh and is later assassinated by his sons while worshiping in the house of Nisroch.
