Josiah becomes king at eight and is praised for walking in David’s way. In his eighteenth year he sends Shaphan to oversee temple repairs. Hilkiah the high priest finds the book of the law. When it is read before Josiah, he tears his clothes and sends officials to inquire of the LORD. Huldah the prophetess confirms that judgment will fall on Jerusalem because of idolatry, but because Josiah’s heart was tender and he humbled himself, he will be gathered to his grave before the disaster.
