What is happening here?
Josiah gathers Judah and Jerusalem, reads the book of the covenant publicly, and commits to follow the LORD. He removes idolatrous vessels, false priests, high places, Topheth, sun worship, and other corrupt practices. At Bethel he destroys Jeroboam’s altar and burns bones on it, explicitly fulfilling the centuries-old prophecy that named Josiah. He then keeps an extraordinary Passover. Yet the LORD’s fierce wrath connected with Manasseh’s sins is not turned away. Josiah is killed at Megiddo. Jehoahaz briefly reigns, then Egypt installs Jehoiakim and exacts tribute.
