What is happening here?
Absalom builds a royal-looking entourage, stations himself by the city gate, flatters people who come for judgment, and gradually steals the hearts of Israel. He then goes to Hebron under the cover of a vow and has himself proclaimed king. David chooses to flee Jerusalem rather than risk the city being struck in battle, while loyal servants, including Ittai the Gittite, follow him. David sends the ark back to Jerusalem and secretly assigns Hushai to counter Ahithophel’s counsel.
