What is happening here?
David orders a census of Israel and Judah despite Joab’s objection. After the count, David’s heart smites him and he confesses that he has sinned greatly. Through Gad the prophet the LORD gives David a choice among three judgments; David chooses to fall into the LORD’s hand, and a plague kills many in Israel. When the destroying angel reaches Jerusalem, the LORD stays the judgment. David buys Araunah’s threshing floor, builds an altar, and the plague is stayed.
