What is happening here?
Exodus 15 begins with the song of Moses and Israel celebrating the LORD’s triumph at the sea. The song praises God as strength, salvation, warrior, holy, incomparable, and the one who will lead his redeemed people to his holy habitation. Miriam and the women answer with song and timbrels. The chapter then turns sharply from worship to wilderness testing: after three days without water, Israel finds bitter water at Marah and murmurs. The LORD shows Moses a tree that makes the waters sweet, gives a statute and test, and identifies himself as the LORD that healeth. Israel then reaches Elim with abundant water and palm trees.
