What is happening here?
Exodus 19 brings Israel to Mount Sinai three months after leaving Egypt. God reminds the people that he carried them on eagles’ wings and brought them to himself, then proposes the covenant: if Israel obeys his voice and keeps his covenant, they will be a peculiar treasure, kingdom of priests, and holy nation. The people agree to obey. God commands careful preparation, washing, boundaries, and reverence because he will descend on Sinai in fire. Thunder, lightning, thick cloud, trumpet sound, smoke, and earthquake accompany the LORD’s descent, and Moses goes up to receive further instruction.
