What is happening here?
Exodus 20 records the Ten Commandments. God begins by identifying himself as the LORD who brought Israel out of Egypt, then commands exclusive worship, forbids idols and misuse of his name, establishes Sabbath observance, commands honor for parents, and prohibits murder, adultery, theft, false witness, and coveting. The people fear the thunder, lightning, trumpet, and smoking mountain and stand afar off while Moses approaches the thick darkness. The chapter closes with instructions against idols of silver or gold and with simple altar requirements that keep worship centered on God rather than human display.
