What is happening here?
Exodus 23 completes a major section of covenant judgments. Israel must reject false reports, mob pressure, partiality, bribery, and oppression of strangers. The law commands practical kindness even toward an enemy’s stray animal or burdened donkey. The seventh year gives the land rest and provision for the poor; the seventh day gives rest to workers and animals. Three annual feasts structure Israel’s worship calendar. The chapter closes with promises concerning the angel who will guide Israel, warnings against Canaanite idolatry, and a gradual conquest in which God will drive out enemies as Israel possesses the land.
