What is happening here?
Exodus 32 records Israel’s golden calf rebellion while Moses remains on Sinai. The people pressure Aaron to make gods to go before them; Aaron collects gold, fashions a calf, builds an altar, and announces a feast to the LORD. God tells Moses the people have corrupted themselves and proposes judgment. Moses intercedes by appealing to God’s name among Egypt and his promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. Descending the mountain, Moses breaks the tablets, destroys the calf, confronts Aaron’s evasive explanation, and calls for those on the LORD’s side. The sons of Levi execute judgment, and Moses returns to intercede for the people’s sin.
