What is happening here?
Exodus 40 brings the book to its climax with the tabernacle erected on the first day of the first month of the second year. Moses sets the ark, veil, table, lampstand, incense altar, burnt-offering altar, laver, and court in their appointed places; he anoints the sanctuary and washes and clothes Aaron and his sons. The chapter repeatedly says Moses acted “as the LORD commanded.” When the work is finished, the cloud covers the tent and the glory of the LORD fills the tabernacle so fully that Moses cannot enter. From then on, the cloud and fire visibly govern Israel’s journeys. Exodus ends not merely with people freed from Pharaoh but with the LORD dwelling among and leading his redeemed people.
