What is happening here?
Genesis 16 records Sarai and Abram’s attempt to resolve the promised-child problem through Hagar. Sarai gives her Egyptian maid to Abram, Hagar conceives, and conflict follows between the women. Hagar flees into the wilderness, where the angel of the LORD finds her, tells her to return, promises numerous descendants, and names the coming son Ishmael because the LORD has heard her affliction. Hagar responds to the God who sees her.
