What is happening here?
Genesis 23 records Sarah’s death at age 127 and Abraham’s purchase of a burial place in Canaan. Abraham mourns for Sarah and negotiates publicly with the sons of Heth and Ephron for the cave and field of Machpelah. Though Abraham has been promised the land, he insists on purchasing the property at full price. The deed is carefully described, giving Abraham a legally recognized burial possession in the promised land.
