What is happening here?
Genesis 30 continues the household struggle between Rachel and Leah. Rachel’s barrenness produces envy, and both sisters involve their handmaids Bilhah and Zilpah in bearing children to Jacob. Leah later bears additional sons and Dinah, and God finally remembers Rachel, who gives birth to Joseph. The second half turns to Jacob and Laban’s wages: Jacob’s flocks increase greatly as he prepares for eventual independence.
