What is happening here?
Genesis 32 follows Jacob as he approaches Esau. Angels meet him, but news that Esau is coming with four hundred men fills Jacob with fear. He divides his company, prays by appealing to God’s command and promises, and sends large gifts ahead. Alone at night, Jacob wrestles with a mysterious man until daybreak, receives the new name Israel, and is permanently marked by a limp. He names the place Peniel because he has seen God face to face and lived.
