What is happening here?
Jephthah, driven from his family because he is the son of a harlot, is recalled by the elders of Gilead when Ammon threatens them. He first argues Israel’s historical case against the Ammonite king, showing that Israel did not seize Ammon’s land in the exodus. The Spirit of the LORD comes upon him, but Jephthah then makes a rash vow before battle. After victory, his daughter is the first to come from his house, creating one of the book’s most difficult and tragic scenes.
