What is happening here?
Leviticus 21 gives special holiness requirements for priests. Ordinary priests face limits concerning contact with the dead and marriage, while the high priest has even stricter restrictions. The chapter also lists physical blemishes that prevent a priest from approaching the altar to offer the bread of God, though such a priest may still eat holy food. The point is ceremonial fitness for representative sanctuary service, not the person’s human worth.
