What is happening here?
Numbers 11 records a rapid breakdown after Israel leaves Sinai. The people complain, fire from the LORD burns among them, and then a mixed multitude fuels intense craving for the food of Egypt. Moses becomes overwhelmed by the burden of leadership. God appoints seventy elders to share the load and provides quail in abundance, but the craving is judged with a severe plague. The chapter exposes discontent that romanticizes bondage and despises God’s provision.
