What is happening here?
Numbers 13 sends twelve tribal representatives to spy out Canaan for forty days. They confirm that the land is fruitful and bring back a cluster of grapes, but ten spies focus on fortified cities, powerful inhabitants, and giants. Caleb quiets the people and urges immediate possession because Israel is able to overcome under God’s promise. The chapter ends with the ten spies viewing themselves as grasshoppers before the inhabitants, setting up the rebellion of Numbers 14.
