Numbers 20 compresses several major transitions into one chapter. Miriam dies at Kadesh. When the people again lack water, Moses and Aaron are told to speak to the rock, but Moses angrily speaks to the congregation and strikes the rock twice. Water still comes, yet Moses and Aaron are barred from bringing Israel into the land because they did not sanctify the LORD before the people. Edom refuses Israel passage, and Aaron dies on Mount Hor as the high priesthood passes to Eleazar.
