CHAPTER STUDY WORKSPACE

Numbers 22

Numbers 22 begins the Balaam narrative. Balak king of Moab fears Israel after its victories and sends for Balaam to curse the nation. God initially forbids Balaam to go because Israel is blessed. After further messengers, Balaam is permitted to go under strict limitation to speak only God’s word. On the journey, the angel of the LORD opposes him; Balaam’s donkey sees the angel before Balaam does and miraculously speaks after being struck. The chapter exposes the danger of greed and the impossibility of manipulating God’s blessing through pagan divination.
