What is happening here?
Numbers 25 records Israel’s grave sin at Baal-peor. Men commit fornication with Moabite women and are drawn into sacrificial meals and worship of Baal-peor. Divine judgment begins. In a brazen act, an Israelite man brings a Midianite woman into the camp before Moses and the congregation. Phinehas, Aaron’s grandson, executes judgment and stops the plague, which has already killed twenty-four thousand. God grants Phinehas a covenant of peace and everlasting priesthood because he was zealous for God’s holiness.
