What is happening here?
Numbers 26 records the second census of Israel’s fighting men, taken after the plague at Baal-peor. The new generation is counted by tribe and family for both military organization and future land distribution. The total is 601,730, close to but slightly below the first census total. The Levites are counted separately. The chapter closes by emphasizing that none of the men counted in the first census remain except Joshua and Caleb, exactly as the LORD had said.
