What is happening here?
Numbers 27 resolves a land-inheritance case and prepares for leadership succession. The daughters of Zelophehad ask why their father’s name should disappear because he had no son. The LORD declares their claim right and establishes a broader inheritance order for similar cases. Then Moses views the promised land from afar after being reminded of his Meribah failure. At Moses’ request for a shepherd over Israel, God chooses Joshua, and Moses publicly lays hands on him before Eleazar and the congregation.
