What is happening here?
Numbers 30 gives laws concerning vows and binding obligations. A man who vows to the LORD must not break his word. For a woman living under her father’s authority or a married woman under her husband’s household authority, the vow may stand if heard and permitted, or be disallowed when first heard. A widow or divorced woman’s vow stands on her own responsibility. The chapter regulates serious speech made before God and prevents vows from becoming a source of household disorder.
