What is happening here?
Numbers 8 describes the lighting of the seven lamps, the cleansing and presentation of the Levites, and their age of tabernacle service. The Levites are sprinkled, washed, shaved, and presented before the LORD while Israel lays hands upon them. They are offered as a living gift in place of Israel’s firstborn and given to Aaron and his sons for tabernacle work. The chapter emphasizes that those serving near holy things must themselves be set apart according to God’s command.
