Ruth goes out to glean behind the reapers and happens to enter the field belonging to Boaz, a wealthy kinsman of Elimelech. Boaz has heard of Ruth’s loyalty to Naomi and orders his workers to protect her, gives her food, and deliberately allows extra grain to fall for her. Ruth returns to Naomi with abundant provision. Naomi recognizes Boaz as one of their near kinsmen and urges Ruth to remain in his fields through the harvests.
