1 John 4 Overview

John commands believers to test the spirits because many false prophets have gone into the world. The true confession centers on Jesus Christ come in the flesh. He then develops the theme that God is love: God loved first, sent His Son as propitiation, and His love should shape believers’ love for one another. Perfected love gives boldness and casts out tormenting fear.

Before you read 1 John 4

Coming from

John marvels at the Father’s love in calling believers His sons and says that seeing Christ will result in likeness to Him. He contrasts righteous living with the practice of sin, points to Christ as the One manifested to take away sins and destroy the devil’s works, and makes brotherly love concrete through Christ’s sacrifice and practical care for a needy brother.

In this chapter

John commands believers to test the spirits because many false prophets have gone into the world. The true confession centers on Jesus Christ come in the flesh. He then develops the theme that God is love: God loved first, sent His Son as propitiation, and His love should shape believers’ love for one another. Perfected love gives boldness and casts out tormenting fear.

Leads into

John closes by connecting faith in Jesus as the Christ with being born of God, love of God with love of His children, and faith with victory over the world. He presents the Spirit, water, and blood as witnesses, insists that God’s record is greater than man’s, and states his purpose plainly: believers may know that they have eternal life. He ends with confidence in prayer, concern for a sinning brother, and a warning against idols.

Key understandingExplore deeper

‘God is love’ describes God’s character; it does not mean every human idea labeled love is morally right.

Testing the spirits is doctrinal discernment, not suspicion of every spiritual experience merely because it is unusual.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Truth about Jesus must be tested

The incarnation is central to distinguishing the Spirit of God from error.

God is the source of Christian love

Believers love because He first loved them.

The Father sent the Son as Saviour

Love is defined by God’s saving action, not sentiment alone.

Mature love gives boldness

The believer need not live under tormenting fear of judgment.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

John 1:14

The Word truly came in the flesh.

1 Timothy 3:16

God was manifest in the flesh.

Romans 5:8

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not define love independently of God’s truth

The same chapter that says God is love commands doctrinal testing.

Do not turn ‘perfect love casteth out fear’ into denial of reverence for God

The fear in context has torment connected with judgment.

Do not make loving others the cause of being born of God

John describes family resemblance flowing from God’s prior love.

Chapter outline4 sections
1-6Believers must test the spirits; the Spirit confessing Jesus Christ come in the flesh is of God, while false spirits are of the world7-12Believers must love one another because God is love and sent his Son as the propitiation for sins13-16The Spirit gives assurance that believers dwell in God, and the apostles testify that the Father sent the Son as Saviour of the world17-21Perfect love casts out fear, and love for God must include love for one’s brother
1

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2

Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

4

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5

They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

6

We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

7

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8

He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

9

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

10

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

11

Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

12

No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

13

Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

14

And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

15

Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

16

And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

17

Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

18

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

19

We love him, because he first loved us.

20

If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

21

And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
