1 Kings 3 Overview
Solomon marries Pharaoh’s daughter and worships at Gibeon before the temple is built. The LORD appears to him in a dream and invites him to ask for what he desires. Solomon asks for an understanding heart to judge the people, and God grants wisdom plus riches and honor. The dispute between two women over a living child immediately displays that wisdom.

Key understandingExplore deeper
Solomon’s description of himself as a ‘little child’ expresses inexperience, not necessarily literal childhood. Second Chronicles 1 identifies Gibeon as the location of the tabernacle and brazen altar. The chapter also plants tensions—an Egyptian marriage and continued high-place worship—that will matter later.
