1 Kings 6 Overview
In Solomon’s fourth year—480 years after the exodus—temple construction begins. The chapter describes the structure, side chambers, cedar interior, oracle, cherubim, doors, carved decorations, and gold overlay. In the middle of the architecture God reminds Solomon that His dwelling among Israel is connected with walking in His statutes. The house is completed after seven years.

Key understandingExplore deeper
The 480-year notice is a major biblical chronological marker linking the temple to the exodus. The building echoes the tabernacle while adapting worship to Israel’s settled life. Verses 11-13 interrupt the architecture to make the theological point: an impressive structure cannot substitute for covenant faithfulness.
