REVIEWED OVERVIEW

1 Peter 5 Overview

Peter exhorts elders to feed God’s flock willingly, not for filthy lucre or domination, but as examples, awaiting the Chief Shepherd’s crown of glory. Younger believers should submit appropriately, all should be clothed with humility, cast cares on God, remain sober and vigilant against the devil, resist him steadfast in faith, and trust the God of all grace to establish them after suffering.

Before you read 1 Peter 5

Coming from

Peter tells believers to arm themselves with Christ’s mind toward suffering and no longer live for former lusts. He urges fervent charity, hospitality, faithful stewardship of gifts, and God-glorifying speech and service. He warns them not to think fiery trials strange, distinguishes suffering for Christ from suffering as an evildoer, and calls those suffering according to God’s will to entrust themselves to the faithful Creator.

In this chapter

Peter exhorts elders to feed God’s flock willingly, not for filthy lucre or domination, but as examples, awaiting the Chief Shepherd’s crown of glory. Younger believers should submit appropriately, all should be clothed with humility, cast cares on God, remain sober and vigilant against the devil, resist him steadfast in faith, and trust the God of all grace to establish them after suffering.

Key understandingExplore deeper

Pastoral authority is explicitly limited by the command not to lord over God’s heritage; shepherds are examples under the Chief Shepherd.

Casting care on God and resisting the devil are joined to humility and sober vigilance, not sensational spiritual-war techniques.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Pastors are under-shepherds

The flock belongs to God, and Christ is the Chief Shepherd.

Humility attracts grace

God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

Believers can cast care on God

He cares for them personally.

The devil should be resisted in faith

Suffering churches are not helpless before him.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

John 21:15–17

Jesus charges Peter himself to feed His sheep.

James 4:6–7

James also joins humility, submission to God, and resisting the devil.

Acts 20:28

Elders are charged to feed the church purchased by Christ’s blood.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not use pastoral authority to justify domination

Peter expressly forbids being lords over God’s heritage.

Do not interpret the roaring lion image as teaching believers can lose eternal life to Satan

The command is vigilant resistance in faith, not fear that Christ cannot keep His own.

Do not promise suffering ends immediately

Peter points to God’s strengthening after believers have suffered ‘a while.’

1

The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

2

Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

3

Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

4

And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

5

Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

6

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

7

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

8

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

9

Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

10

But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

11

To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

12

By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.

13

The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.

14

Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
