2 Thessalonians 2 Overview
Paul addresses confusion about the day of Christ and ‘our gathering together unto him.’ He says that day will not come until the falling away first and the man of sin is revealed, who exalts himself and is empowered by Satan. The Lord will destroy him with the brightness of His coming. Paul then thanks God for believers chosen to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.
Before you read 2 Thessalonians 2
Coming from
Paul thanks God for the Thessalonians’ growing faith, love, and patience under persecution. Their endurance points toward God’s righteous judgment: persecutors will face judgment when Jesus is revealed from heaven, while afflicted believers will receive rest.
In this chapter
Paul addresses confusion about the day of Christ and ‘our gathering together unto him.’ He says that day will not come until the falling away first and the man of sin is revealed, who exalts himself and is empowered by Satan. The Lord will destroy him with the brightness of His coming. Paul then thanks God for believers chosen to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.
Leads into
Paul asks prayer that the word of the Lord may run and be glorified, expresses confidence in the Lord’s faithfulness, and commands withdrawal from disorderly believers who refuse to work. He reminds them of his own labor and gives the rule, ‘if any would not work, neither should he eat,’ while still commanding the church not to treat the disciplined person as an enemy but admonish him as a brother.
