REVIEWED OVERVIEW

Exodus 24 Overview

Exodus 24 formally ratifies the Sinai covenant. Moses tells the people all the LORD’s words and judgments, and they answer that they will do them. Moses writes the words, builds an altar with twelve pillars, and young men offer sacrifices. Half the blood is placed on the altar and half is sprinkled on the people after the book of the covenant is read, with Moses declaring, “Behold the blood of the covenant.” Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders then ascend and see the God of Israel in a remarkable covenant meal scene. Moses later goes farther up the mountain into the cloud for forty days and nights to receive the tables of stone.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Truth 1

The covenant is not merely spoken; it is written, read, agreed to, and ratified with blood.

Truth 2

The twelve pillars represent Israel’s twelve tribes in the covenant ceremony.

Truth 3

The blood connects sacrifice, altar, people, and covenant commitment.

Truth 4

The representatives’ meal in God’s presence is an extraordinary sign of covenant fellowship without making God common or fully comprehensible.

Truth 5

Moses enters the cloud for forty days and nights to receive further revelation, preparing for the tabernacle instructions.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Connection 1

Hebrews 9 directly recalls Moses sprinkling the book and people with blood in its comparison of covenants.

Connection 2

Matthew 26 and the other Gospel supper accounts use “blood of the covenant” language in connection with Jesus’ blood.

Connection 3

1 Corinthians 11 preserves the Lord’s supper words concerning the new covenant.

Connection 4

Hebrews 12 contrasts Sinai with new-covenant access and Jesus the mediator.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Keep this clear 1

The vision in verses 10–11 should be held together with passages saying no man can see God in his unveiled fullness. The text describes a real theophanic encounter while emphasizing what was under his feet rather than giving a physical portrait of God.

Keep this clear 2

Israel’s pledge “all that the LORD hath said will we do” belongs to covenant ratification; later failures show that sincere vows do not remove human sinfulness.

Keep this clear 3

Covenant blood here is animal sacrificial blood; the New Testament explicitly presents Christ’s blood as greater and final.

Keep this clear 4

The seventy elders participate as covenant representatives, not as independent mediators equal to Moses.

Read Exodus 24 watching for…

The repeated pledge of obedience.

The book of the covenant and twelve pillars.

The division and sprinkling of blood.

The covenant meal before God.

Moses disappearing into the cloud for forty days and nights.
