REVIEWED OVERVIEW

Exodus 31 Overview

Exodus 31 completes the mountain instructions by naming Bezalel and Aholiab as the chief craftsmen. Bezalel is filled with the Spirit of God in wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and craftsmanship to carry out the sanctuary work, with other wisehearted workers also equipped. The LORD then renews the Sabbath command as a sign between him and Israel and warns against profaning it. The chapter closes with God giving Moses two tables of testimony, written with the finger of God.

Before you read Exodus 31

Coming from

Exodus 30 supplies incense, ransom, washing, anointing, and incense formulas for tabernacle service.

In this chapter

God not only gives the sanctuary design but also equips named workers to execute it, then seals the mountain revelation with Sabbath reminder and stone tablets.

Leads into

Exodus 32 abruptly contrasts the divine pattern on the mountain with Israel’s golden calf rebellion below.

Key understanding

Exodus 31 completes the mountain instructions by naming Bezalel and Aholiab as the chief craftsmen. Bezalel is filled with the Spirit of God in wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and craftsmanship to carry out the sanctuary work, with other wisehearted workers also equipped. Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Truth 1

Craftsmanship can be Spirit-enabled service to God; wisdom for skilled work is part of the tabernacle’s divine provision.

Truth 2

Bezalel and Aholiab work from a revealed design rather than using skill to redefine worship.

Truth 3

The Sabbath is explicitly called a sign between the LORD and the children of Israel throughout their generations.

Truth 4

Holiness includes both sacred work and commanded rest; even tabernacle construction does not override the Sabbath sign.

Truth 5

The stone tablets are described as written with the finger of God, emphasizing divine authorship of the covenant testimony.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Connection 1

Exodus 35–36 later shows Bezalel, Aholiab, and the wisehearted actually carrying out the work.

Connection 2

Luke 11:20 and Exodus 8:19 share “finger of God” language in contexts of unmistakable divine power.

Connection 3

2 Corinthians 3 contrasts letters written on stone with the ministry of the Spirit in the new covenant.

Connection 4

Hebrews 4 uses Sabbath/rest language in a larger theological argument while distinguishing Israel’s historical rest from God’s ultimate rest.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Keep this clear 1

Spirit-filled craftsmanship here concerns specific divinely assigned sanctuary work; it should not be turned into a formula that every artistic talent proves a special spiritual office.

Keep this clear 2

The Sabbath sign is specifically identified with Israel in this covenant setting; New Testament application must respect that covenant distinction.

Keep this clear 3

The death penalty for Sabbath profanation belongs to Israel’s theocratic civil covenant and is not church-authorized punishment.

Keep this clear 4

The “finger of God” language communicates divine authorship and power; Scripture does not require a literal anatomical understanding of God.

Read Exodus 31 watching for…

Bezalel’s Spirit-given wisdom and craftsmanship.

Aholiab and the wider group of wisehearted workers.

The Sabbath as a covenant sign with Israel.

The warning that sacred construction does not cancel commanded rest.

The two tablets written with the finger of God.

1-11Bezaleel and Aholiab are appointed for the work12-17The Sabbath is commanded as a sign18God gives Moses the two tables of testimony
1

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2

See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah:

3

And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,

4

To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,

5

And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship.

6

And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan: and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee;

7

The tabernacle of the congregation, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is thereupon, and all the furniture of the tabernacle,

8

And the table and his furniture, and the pure candlestick with all his furniture, and the altar of incense,

9

And the altar of burnt offering with all his furniture, and the laver and his foot,

10

And the cloths of service, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest's office,

11

And the anointing oil, and sweet incense for the holy place: according to all that I have commanded thee shall they do.

12

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

13

Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

14

Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

15

Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

16

Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

17

It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

18

And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
