Coming from
Chapter 5 ended with temple construction underway and Tattenai asking Darius to search the royal archives for Cyrus’s original authorization.
In this chapter
The decree is verified, opposition is overruled, the temple is finished and dedicated, and Passover worship is restored.
Leads into
Chapter 7 moves forward to the later reign of Artaxerxes and introduces Ezra the scribe, whose mission centers on teaching and applying God’s law.
Key understandingExplore deeper
The temple is finished in 516/515 BC during Darius I, decades before Ezra’s arrival under Artaxerxes in chapter 7. Ezra therefore contains a significant time jump. The dedication is joyful but modest compared with Solomon’s temple, fitting the reduced circumstances of the restored community.
